Reputable Breeders
The reputable breeder will focus their attention on the health and development of a breed. They will not over breed their dogs. Reputable breeders at times can spend more on the cost of medical care, medical screening, premium nutrition, and the maintenance of raising healthy dogs. Reputable breeders should have a veterinary care plan with the attending veterinarian making visits to the facility. USDA and each state have on site inspections as well. Along with the medical cost a reputable breeder will also have costs in keeping their dogs in a clean environment. Their homes/living spaces should be nice and clean. No mud, hay. Cleanliness is important to the health of the adults and puppies. Adults and puppies should always have areas to run and play receiving lots of exercise daily and extensive attention from humans. Whether you buy a puppy from us, or someone else, check references. Making sure the reviews you are reading are actual post from customer/families not the breeder. You should be able to see the persons comments and their contact information. Reputable breeders have a health guarantee detailing what is and is not covered. Ask questions, don’t get over excited and forget to do your homework. Dogs as well as people sometimes have health issues. Even reputable breeders sometimes have a puppy from time to time that may experience a life therenting issue. This should not happen often, a reputable breeder will retire any adult that carries a hereditary medical problem. The health guarantee and an agreement to return the puppy to the breeder should be clear in the health agreement. As is the responsibility of the breeder to post their guarantee, it is as important for the consumer to read and understand the agreement.
Some breeders fall somewhere between the reputable breeder and the puppy mill breeder. They love their dogs but unfortunately it is their “job” and they breed for money. That is not to say they do not love their dogs. Unfortunately, these dog breeders rely on the sale of their puppies as their income. These breeders may or may not provide sanitary and safe living quarters for their dogs.
